April 11, 1985, Sculley Forces Out Jobs

Almost exactly 2 years after joining Apple, John Sculley, asks Steve Jobs to step down as head of the Macintosh division at an Apple Computer board meeting. With the backing of the company’s other executives, Jobs is stripped of nearly all responsibilities at Apple. While Jobs retains the title of Chairman, he has no authority and eventually leaves Apple.

Who is John Sculley – John Sculley III (born April 6, 1939) is an American businessman, entrepreneur, and investor in high-tech startups. Sculley was vice-president (1970–1977) and president of PepsiCo (1977–1983), until he became a chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc. on April 8, 1983.

Sales at Apple increased from $800 million to $8 billion under Sculley’s management, although many attributes his success to Sculley joining the company just when Steve Jobs’ visions and Steve Wozniak’s creations had become highly lucrative.
