First Modern GPS Satellite Launches

February 14, 1989

The first of 24 Block-II GPS satellites were launched on this date. Block-II was the first modern GPS satellite that form the modern GPS system we know today. The Global Positioning System (GPS), originally Navstar GPS, is a satellite-based radio navigation system owned by the United States government and is now operated by the United States Space Force.
